Before you can be sure of your ability to transmute DESIRE into its monetary equivalent, you will require SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE of the service, merchandise, or profession which you intend to offer in return for fortune. Perhaps you may need much more specialized knowledge than you have the ability or the inclination to acquire, and if this should be true, you may bridge your weakness through the aid of your “Master Mind” group.

Technical Packs or Tech Packs for fashion products an garments

In the first part of any start-up, money is tight and if you are at the beginning of your journey, you’ll probably have a small budget.

Everyone knows they have to make the garments they design and the manufacturing cost is always thought about, but the prep for this, the Tech Pack for clothing, usually isn’t something people give advice on, list on websites under costing sheets or even consider.

I have a number of clients who don’t believe that they need to get Tech Packs done, mainly because they have close family or friend connections to factories, or they just believe it’s a waste of money. In some cases they would be right. On the internet I see hundreds of bad quality packs that cost anything up to US$400. Ridiculous! But if done properly, a Tech Pack WILL save you money. But regardless of the training courses I do. The webinars and the blog posts, I will never convince them otherwise… well for a couple of years at least…..

The cost implications of not getting a tech pack done is very significant. Not just in money, but also in time. For those who have tried to produce a garment without one, the story of one client, Kim, will seem very familiar.

First Kim had to source a factory. If you are a new brand, this can be problematic because the factory won’t trust their time and skills on small orders and really don’t consider you a priority. So they’ll charge you for sampling costs at every stage to cover the cost of their staff, time and materials. You’ll also be charged a large amount per sample [and per unit for bulk production] because your quantities are so low.

Kim however, had a father who had connections as well as her husband’s family who owned one. So this for her was simple enough….. But the same rules applied. She was being charged a large amount per sample. Business is business after all.

Even though she spent time in the factory itself, explaining her ideas, showing them pictures and had a personal connection, the samples came back wrong every time. In terms of cost, her personal connection didn’t matter. When she asked them to change something or alter a measurement, they charged her the cost for each sample, plus a shipping cost.

Samples happened over and over and eventually she found that the factories were starting to get frustrated and were going to stop working with her….. To be fair, the factories, because of her personal connections did try their best and did accommodate her far longer than they would the average person. At this point, she had been trying to create her first samples for 2 years!

Then Kim attended a seminar I gave on Tech Packs and told me the same story I have just told you. She, like many others, knew about Tech packs and didn’t see the point and thought that the cost of getting one done was a waste of money, but after 2 years of paying for samples, she could now finally see their value.

Kim isn’t alone. Not at all. She, like many others think that a few pictures and explanations would save money and time, but they are thinking short term. You, since you are reading this, are in a great frame of mind. You’re thinking long term savings and you are quite right to do so.
So what does this actually mean in terms of real cost to you? The answer might surprise you….

I’ve had clients that, on their own, have been really lucky and only had to do 3 or 4 rounds of sampling. Others have done 7 or 8 before the factory has stopped communication and they’ve had to start again. Believe it or not, including fabrics, shipping costs and time, these brands have spent over US$ 10,000 making mistakes [and those are the lucky ones] and spent up to 3 years trying to make one sample.

Factories are a business and don’t deal in creativity. They deal in money. Cost. Production time and Product. Just because the end result is fashion, does not mean they think creatively like you.

Factories don’t and won’t make decisions on your product for you. They won’t make assumptions on what you really need. They won’t fill in the information gaps you don’t have and they won’t “just get it”.

Factories are liable for mistakes in terms of cost, so they will only produce exactly what is written on the page in front of them. If the information is wrong, then that is down to you and you alone. You have to make sure that “THE page in front of them” is exactly what you want and need.

A Tech Pack for clothing, if done properly and to a quality standard will make sure that the product is right first or second time and comes back to you within a few weeks, which means you’re saving money and time and you can get on with other parts of launching your business, with some budget left to do just that. Plus the sooner you have the production done, the sooner you can sell your products and get back revenue.

Going to a professional for this service, will cost you money, but I promise it won’t be as much as you’ll spend on wasted sampling costs. It gives you the benefit of  that expert’s experience and knowledge of the factory process, without having to spend YOUR time gathering and learning the information, which can take years.

When Napoleon Hill wrote, Think and Grow Rich, he discussed the power of a mastermind group. Basically a group of specialists in different fields coming together to provide their expert knowledge. At Fashion Services, we have grown our team of 40 amazing specialists in different fields, to work on your brand.

I have an idea for a fashion brand or fashion business

If you’re starting your fashion brand, chances are that production and manufacturing will be a new area for you. Tech Packs with all of their terminology, graphical language and machinery, will be a learning curve that you won’t have had time to master, especially if you’re on a tight budget. Although Tech Packs might seem pricey, they’ll save you time and money in the long term and get you selling products far quicker than if you tried on your own.

I've started a fashion brand but I need help

Now that you’ve been in business for a while, you might be thinking of expanding or pushing your products in new directions. You might have already made products before and even have a designer, but new ideas and materials mean you may need support to expand your business. All you need, is a little upfront help to get you started and move your business forward. Someone to do a few initial Tech Packs and help you develop your product before you do it yourself.

I want to expand my fashion brand or business
